US30 Trading Hours: Best Times to Trade the Dow (Every Time Zone)

By Sa’ood Williams · Updated 12 October 2026 · 6 min read

US30, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, has two sets of hours. The underlying stocks trade on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq from 9:30 to 16:00 New York time, Monday to Friday. US30 CFDs and Dow futures trade almost around the clock, from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon New York time, with a short daily break around 17:00 to 18:00 New York time. For most traders, the most active and liquid window is the first one to two hours after the 9:30 New York open.

This guide explains both sessions, converts the key times into the major time zones our members trade from, and covers what actually moves the Dow during those hours.

The cash session: 9:30 to 16:00 New York time

The Dow is calculated from the prices of 30 large US companies. Those prices only update while US stock exchanges are open, so the official index value moves during the regular cash session: 9:30 to 16:00 Eastern Time (ET), Monday to Friday, excluding US market holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Independence Day. Some holidays also have early closes, typically at 13:00 ET.

Outside these hours, the index itself is effectively frozen. What you see moving on a US30 chart overnight is the futures market, which brokers use to price their CFDs.

The near-24-hour market: CFDs and futures

Dow futures (the E-mini Dow, symbol YM, and the Micro E-mini Dow, symbol MYM) trade on CME Globex from Sunday 18:00 ET to Friday 17:00 ET, with a daily maintenance break from 17:00 to 18:00 ET. Most brokers price their US30 CFD from these futures, so their CFD hours follow a similar pattern.

CFD hours are broker-dependent. Many brokers pause US30 for an hour or slightly longer around 17:00 ET, and some quote server times in GMT+2 or GMT+3 rather than New York time. Always check your broker’s contract specifications for the exact break, holiday schedule and server time zone.

During the overnight hours, volume is much thinner. Price can still move, especially around Asian or European news, but spreads at many brokers widen and moves can be less orderly than during the New York session.

Why the New York open is the most active time

At 9:30 ET, the 30 component stocks begin trading in their primary market. Orders that built up overnight are executed, institutions rebalance, and the index starts reflecting real stock prices again. That concentration of activity is why the first hour of the cash session is usually the most volatile and liquid part of the US30 day.

Activity often quietens around the middle of the New York day, then picks up again into the 16:00 close as funds adjust positions. The hour before the open also matters: many major US economic releases come out at 8:30 ET, an hour before stocks open, and futures react straight away.

  • 08:30 ET: common release time for US jobs data, CPI, retail sales and GDP.
  • 09:30 ET: cash session opens, usually the busiest period.
  • 10:00 ET: some data releases, such as ISM surveys and consumer sentiment.
  • 14:00 ET: Federal Reserve policy statements on meeting days, followed by a press conference.
  • 16:00 ET: cash session closes; many companies report earnings shortly after.

US30 key times in every time zone

The table below assumes the northern-hemisphere summer period, when New York is on Eastern Daylight Time (UTC-4) and London is on British Summer Time (UTC+1). It assumes Sydney is on Australian Eastern Standard Time (UTC+10). Johannesburg (UTC+2), Dubai (UTC+4), Lagos (UTC+1) and Mumbai (UTC+5:30) do not use daylight saving.

How daylight saving changes these times

The United States moves its clocks back on the first Sunday of November and forward on the second Sunday of March. The UK changes on the last Sunday of October and the last Sunday of March. When the US is on standard time (UTC-5), every New York event happens one hour later in UTC and in all the zones that do not change their clocks: the NY open becomes 14:30 UTC, 16:30 in Johannesburg, 18:30 in Dubai, 15:30 in Lagos and 20:00 in Mumbai.

London and New York are usually five hours apart, so the NY open stays at 14:30 London time year-round, except for a few weeks in March and late October or early November when one country has changed its clocks and the other has not. In those weeks the gap is four hours and the open falls at 13:30 London time.

Sydney moves the opposite way. Its clocks go forward in early October and back in early April, so during the northern winter the NY open falls around 01:30 the next morning in Sydney rather than 23:30. If you trade from a zone with its own daylight saving, a reliable habit is to anchor everything to New York time and convert from there, or use a market sessions clock that handles the changes for you.

What moves US30 during these hours

Because the Dow is an index of US companies, the biggest drivers are US-centred:

  • US economic data: employment reports (non-farm payrolls), inflation (CPI and PCE), retail sales, GDP and business surveys shape expectations for growth and interest rates.
  • The Federal Reserve: rate decisions, the statement wording, the chair’s press conference and the meeting minutes can move the whole market within seconds.
  • Earnings of Dow components: each quarter the 30 companies report results, usually before the 9:30 open or after the 16:00 close. Because the Dow is price-weighted, a big move in a high-priced stock can have an outsized effect on the index.
  • Bond yields and the US dollar: rising yields can weigh on stock valuations, and shifts in rate expectations often show up first in the bond market.
  • Global risk sentiment: geopolitical events, energy prices and moves in other major indices feed into overnight futures pricing before New York opens.

Choosing a time that fits your life

There is no single best time for everyone. The New York open offers the most activity, but it also brings the fastest moves, which can be demanding for a newer trader. For someone in Mumbai or Dubai, it falls in the evening; for someone in Sydney, close to midnight. Being consistent matters more than chasing every session: pick a window you can attend regularly, alert and without distractions, and know which scheduled releases fall inside it.

It also helps to check an economic calendar at the start of each week. Knowing that a jobs report or Fed decision is due lets you decide in advance whether you want to be watching the market at that moment or standing aside.
