Gold (XAUUSD) Trading Sessions and the Best Time to Trade Gold

By Sa’ood Williams · Updated 12 October 2026 · 5 min read

Gold (XAUUSD) trades almost 24 hours a day, from Sunday evening to Friday evening New York time, with a short daily break of about an hour around 17:00 New York time. Activity flows through three sessions: Asia, London and New York. For most traders, the busiest and most liquid period is the overlap between London and New York, roughly 08:00 to 12:00 New York time, when both of the world’s largest gold trading centres are open at the same time.

Below, we explain each session, convert the key times into major time zones, and cover the economic forces that drive the gold price.

How the gold market is open almost all week

Unlike a stock index, gold is not tied to a single exchange. It trades over the counter between banks and dealers, centred on London, and as futures on COMEX in New York, with significant activity in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore and other centres. Because one financial centre hands over to the next, there is almost always someone quoting a price.

COMEX gold futures trade from Sunday 18:00 to Friday 17:00 New York time, with a daily 60-minute break from 17:00 to 18:00. Spot gold and XAUUSD CFDs at most brokers follow a similar rhythm.

Exact XAUUSD hours are broker-dependent. Some brokers pause gold for slightly longer than an hour each day, close a little earlier on Fridays, or quote server times in GMT+2 or GMT+3. Holiday schedules also differ. Check your broker’s contract specifications before relying on any specific time.

The three gold trading sessions

  • Asian session: begins as Sydney, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore and Shanghai come online. Physical demand from China and India is important to gold over the long term, but intraday price movement in this session is often more contained.
  • London session: London is the centre of the global over-the-counter gold market. Activity usually picks up around the 08:00 London open, and the LBMA Gold Price benchmark auctions take place at 10:30 and 15:00 London time.
  • New York session: COMEX futures volume, US economic data and US-hours trading by large funds make this an active period, especially in its first half.

The London-New York overlap

From around 08:00 New York time (when US traders arrive and major data begins to be released) until the London afternoon winds down at roughly 11:00 to 12:00 New York time, both centres are active together. This is typically when gold sees its heaviest volume, tightest spreads at many brokers and largest intraday moves. High-impact US data at 08:30 New York time falls right inside this window, which is one reason the overlap can be so lively.

Liquidity tends to fade in the late New York afternoon and is usually at its lowest around the daily break, when spreads at many brokers widen noticeably.

Gold key times in every time zone

This table assumes the northern-hemisphere summer period: New York on Eastern Daylight Time (UTC-4), London on British Summer Time (UTC+1) and Sydney on Australian Eastern Standard Time (UTC+10). Johannesburg (UTC+2), Dubai (UTC+4), Lagos (UTC+1) and Mumbai (UTC+5:30) do not change their clocks.

When the US and UK return to standard time (from the first Sunday of November in the US and the last Sunday of October in the UK), New York-based events happen one hour later in UTC and in Johannesburg, Dubai, Lagos and Mumbai. London-based events, such as the London open and LBMA auctions, happen one hour later in UTC and those same zones. For a few weeks each spring and autumn the two countries are out of step, so the London-New York gap shrinks from five hours to four.

Sydney changes clocks in the opposite direction, moving forward in early October and back in early April, so its times can differ from the table by up to two hours during the northern winter. Anchoring your routine to New York or London time, or using a sessions clock that tracks daylight saving, avoids mistakes.

What moves the gold price

Gold pays no interest and is priced in US dollars, so it reacts strongly to the cost of money and the strength of the dollar. The main drivers are:

  • The US dollar: because XAUUSD is quoted in dollars, a stronger dollar often weighs on gold and a weaker dollar often supports it. The relationship is common but not fixed.
  • Real yields: when inflation-adjusted interest rates rise, holding a non-yielding asset like gold becomes relatively less attractive, and the reverse is also true.
  • The Federal Reserve: rate decisions, statements, the chair’s press conferences and speeches by policymakers shift expectations for both yields and the dollar.
  • CPI and inflation data: inflation surprises change expectations for Fed policy and can move gold sharply at release time.
  • Non-farm payrolls: the monthly US jobs report, usually released on the first Friday of the month at 08:30 New York time, is one of the biggest scheduled events for gold.
  • Geopolitics and risk sentiment: conflicts, crises and financial stress can lift demand for gold as a perceived safe haven, sometimes outside normal session hours.
  • Central bank and physical demand: purchases by central banks, jewellery demand and ETF flows influence the longer-term trend more than any single day.

Choosing your gold trading window

The overlap is the most active window, but it is not the only valid one. A trader in Johannesburg or Lagos can reach the London open and the overlap in the working day. In Dubai or Mumbai the overlap falls in the late afternoon and evening. In Sydney it runs late at night, so some traders there focus on the London open instead. What matters is choosing a window you can attend consistently and knowing which scheduled releases fall inside it.

Checking the economic calendar at the start of each week helps you see where CPI, payrolls or Fed decisions sit, so a sudden move does not come as a surprise.

Common questions

What time does the gold market open?

Gold reopens on Sunday at about 18:00 New York time (22:00 UTC in northern summer, 23:00 UTC in winter) and trades nearly 24 hours until Friday afternoon, with a daily break around 17:00 New York time.

What is the best time to trade XAUUSD?

Usually the London-New York overlap, roughly 08:00 to 12:00 New York time, when liquidity and volatility are typically highest. Your own time zone and schedule also matter.

Does gold trade on weekends?

No. The main gold market closes on Friday evening New York time and reopens on Sunday evening. Prices can gap at the reopen if news broke over the weekend.

Why does gold move at 8:30 New York time?

Many major US economic releases, including CPI and the jobs report, come out at 08:30 New York time. They change expectations for interest rates and the dollar, both key drivers of gold.
